Her descriptions have improved, but they appeared to be merely observations, as if she were describing to herself what the setting looks like. It would be better if she had elevated the writing here to show us what the character feels about the surroundings, how grim and awful it is.

At this point, the reader is introduced to Margaret
Prior’s sordid past. She supposedly had done something that would’ve made her deserving of being incarcerated, but there are no clues as to what this is. We do know that she wrote a book about her experiences, so I expect we will hear about it again later.

The chapter where Miss Pryor meets many of the prisoners at Millbank, before she can actually meet the medium, was very boring. All those other characters that she met, none of them were very interesting. None of them exhibited any behaviour that created and atmosphere of unease or threat.

When Miss Pryor meets the medium in her cell, she falls in love with her. The descriptions intimate that she will fall in love with her, but the descriptions are actually quite overly obvious.

Affinity is nowhere near as well written as The Little Stranger. The language is very elementary level, almost, and there are passages where the information provided to the reader is so mundane, I have to wonder why didn’t an editor cut them out? The editor should’ve told Waters to use more vivid language, be more descriptive.
