Really immersed in the journey and hardships. Also really love Glory and Cord—so sweet.

Verne…what a way to go. It was well done I think, but it didn’t hit as hard as I think it should have. Moved on a bit quick, but it does mark that transition to the boys taking the lead.

The tension/danger in the camps is also quite palpable. And Flint’s attitude makes me real nervous, especially when he’s offscreen.

And the drama builds. Flint’s joining the gang is real worrying for me. Like, damn he’s twisted in the head, but he’s written very well with reasonable motivations. Honestly, I’d even find him relatable if he wasn’t so okay with murder.

And with Cord now at the opposite end as potential marshal, I’ve very worried for when they clash. Also Steve’s a surprisingly deep character torn between brothers.

Really great! The ruggedness and family dynamic is great—very much captures the male family dynamic: Verne with his desire to provide and shame when he can’t, Flint’s short fuse and amoral cunning, Steve the not bright giant, and Cord the good guy.

And already the twist with Caroline was a good one for so early into the book.

But yeah, very good—men doing man things.
