Of course she ends up having an affair with the Dark. I so desperately hoped that Schwab wouldn't steer the story in that tired direction. There were signs early on, but I'd hoped such an author wouldn't succumb to such a cliché. It's well written, and there's still a lot to like here, but some of this feels like stock female wish fulfillment. The tall, suave Dark? The shy and sensitive "boy with a broken heart"?

Can't believe I'm only just past the halfway mark. Feels like the climax is right around the corner.

What this book does really well is the foreplay: a slow burn of ever-increasing emotional pressure and anticipation. There are some annoyances and things that make you go “hmm?” And a few scenes that probably aren’t strictly necessary. But the heart is strong.

Enjoying this so far, but the obsession with curly hair is really getting annoying. As is the lifestyle of highly attractive 20-somethings who constantly flirt and hook up and don't seem to care much about anything else. Maybe this is what life is truly like for attractive 20-somethings, even when they're actually 300 years old. But I was never attractive, and I find it wholly unrelatable.
