A LIFE BY FAITH in 1858 starts with kidnapping of a freeborn black woman to be sold into slavery.
"The sound of something shattering woke Faith. She sprang up. “Shiloh! Is thee all right?”
Faith flung open her door. A hand clamped over her mouth. An arm encircled her waist.
A harsh voice whispered. “You got the other one ready?”
“Yeah.”
Something sickly sweet was pressed to her nose. Dear God."
