I am writing as a Deaf reader to share some feedback regarding the use of the term “mute” in To Be Someone All Over Again by Maryam A.H. As someone directly affected by how Deaf and non speaking individuals are represented, I found the term offensive and outdated.

Charlie Referring to a person as “a mute” reduces them to a perceived limitation and ignores the diversity and richness of communication methods within the Deaf and non speaking communities. It also perpetuates harmful stereotypes that are rooted in ableism.

More respectful and inclusive alternatives would include:
• “non-speaking person”
• “person who does not use spoken language”
• “person who uses alternative communication methods”

Language matters, especially in published works that reach broad audiences. I hope you will consider reviewing this usage in future editions or in sensitivity review processes moving forward.

Thank you for your time and for taking this feedback into consideration.
