Is this novel some sort of allegory for wartime? People hiding in homes, government (memory police) breaking into said homes looking for “fugitives,” & the memory police controlling what people can remember = government controlling media and propaganda. Also, If R could remember all his life, why is hiding him a concern now?

I sort of suspected something would happen between the narrator and R; are they going to tell his wife, though?

I can’t help but wonder if the reader is somehow incorporated into the story; have people’s names disappeared from us? Also I love R’s quote on page 109 that says “memories are a lot tougher than you might think. Just like the hearts that hold them.” I was additionally wondering what the significance of including excerpts of the narrators novel was? I’m unsure how it connects to the main story.

The way that the island disappears objects feels sort of simulation-esque… how did the wind that took away the roses separate the roses from the other flowers? I was also a little suspicious of R this chapter (before we figure out that he can remember), especially when he was suddenly very intrigued in the narrator’s basement.

I was honestly not expecting her mothers death. Also, will the author ever state the narrators name? is that intentional? Will anyone’s first name be given ever (R, the Inui’s, the narrators parents, the nurse & her husband, etc)?

It’s really intriguing so far, the plot-line appears to be unique. I had to stop to do my laundry :(
