And Jesus said, "Blessed be the realtors, for they shall inherit the Kingdom of God for preventing homebuyers from going nuts."
-The Gospel According to Marquise 4:10
Househunting is stressful! I'm this close to jumping onto the 1st Tiny Home with 1 inch of lawn for my pets & my rose and cactus pots just to spare my sanity. :'(
Anyway, back to books. #114: Is there a fictional house you like/wish you owned?

Betsie wrote: "All I can think of are houses in movies..."They count! Fictional is the only rule. :)
Real ones used to represent fictional ones, like the Devonshires's manor used for Austen films also count.
Well, in that case, the cottage used in the 2008 version of Sense and Sensibility, and the old mill house in All that Heaven Allows. Also, the vicarage in Jamaica Inn--the book.
Hope you'll find your dream home soon. It doesn't matter how big or how small the house is, it's what you do with it that will turn it into a home. The Magic Tree House from the series with the same name by Mary Pope Osborne would be pretty cool. Sam Vimes' place in the Discworld series is pretty epic too, with the dragon sanctuary. The cupboard under the stairs in Harry Potter has something cozy about it. Why can't I think of one normal cozy book home? :D Anyway, what's your dream fictional house?
Baba Yaga's house on chicken legs sounds pretty awesome, but I would love to have access to a Magic Tree House as well!

Eliminate the space between letters and the parentheses.
Fred wrote: "Maybe Bag End. Although I might get tired of hitting my head"Never knew you liked Hobbiton! 😄 Not bad, not bad.
Alexandra wrote: "Moomin House! And I like Fred's idea above - Bag End might be nice."Where's the Moomin House in? I don't remember the book...
I didn't suspect Hobbiton would be this popular! 😄
Rapunzel wrote: "Baba Yaga's house on chicken legs sounds pretty awesome, but I would love to have access to a Magic Tree House as well!"Very practical choice! You can move with your entire house. 😄
Thibault wrote: "Why can't I think of one normal cozy book home? :D Anyway, what's your dream fictional house?"Because you're unconventional, and unconventional dwellings are the most fun! 😄
I don't have a fictional dream house, never have. Don't know why exactly and it never bothered me. My dream houses are all real.
Howl’s Moving Castle maybe? Hogwarts? It has to be one either indoor plumbing and HVAC, magical or otherwise, lol.
Jen wrote: "Howl’s Moving Castle maybe? Hogwarts? It has to be one either indoor plumbing and HVAC, magical or otherwise, lol."Pragmatic lass, you! But magical houses would take care of themselves even in pre-plumbing and pre-HVAC times, yeah? 😄

That's Tove Jansson's Moomin books! I think Finn Family Moomintroll is my favourite. But if you haven't read them - they are wonderful.
Nataliya wrote: "Hogwarts :)"Do you seriously want to own a castle with giant snakes, bathrooms haunted with long dead girls, and portraits that can talk and track your movements? That would bring down the property value completely, not to mention the giant spiders outside :D
Fun question! For me, Green Gables on Prince Edward Island. I'll be sending positive vibes your way with your house hunting endeavors, Marquise!
Alexandra wrote: "That's Tove Jansson's Moomin books! I think Finn Family Moomintroll is my favourite. But if you haven't read them - they are wonderful."Oooh! I remember now, you've mentioned these books before in a prior questions thread. Aren't they for children?
I've never got into the Troll lore, can you believe it? All the fairy tales, and somehow I missed them.
Sree wrote: "Do you seriously want to own a castle with giant snakes, bathrooms haunted with long dead girls, and portraits that can talk and track your movements? That would brin..."Methinks Natty won't find those a dealbreaker but want the place even more because of that. ;)
What about you?
Vanessa wrote: "Fun question! For me, Green Gables on Prince Edward Island."That's a great choice! I like Anne's adopted home a lot, too.
Thank you, sweet Vanessa, much appreciated. <3

Do you have a favourite literary house?
Gabrielle (Reading Rampage) wrote: "Easy: Manderlay! Haunted and grumpy widower owner optional ;-)"Excellent, excellent! I like that. English manors are one of my favourite real-life houses, too.
A nightmare to do maintenance on, for sure, but assuming you got the funds... worth it! :)

You don't have a fictional house you dream of?
Ooh, house hunting is the worst. Our current home is my favorite place but we did overpay (it was 2021, alas. but I never want to leave) Fictional house-wise, I love the House of Many Ways from Dianna Wynne Jones,
Lothlorien is pretty, but I don't think it counts as a house. Also I wonder what they do when there are storms and hurricanes and such - unless they keep them away with magic or wards which would make sense.Good luck house hunting, I hope you'll find something you like soon!
Robert Crais' private eye Elvis Cole lives in an A-frame house in the hills above L.A., while Max Allan Collins' hit man Quarry has a lakeside one in rural Wisconsin. It was a building style that was popular in the 50's and 60's, but not seen much these days. Either one sounds fine to me.
The upside-down house in Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, by Betsy McDonald.. Ha! Also, perhaps Heidi's grandfather's house. I'd also like the idea of owning the Professor's house, (or that applewood wardrobe).
Karen wrote: "Ooh, house hunting is the worst. Our current home is my favorite place but we did overpay."I'm so willing to overpay, but the economy isn't that good right now. :'(
What's that house like, and in what book? I'm afraid I only read Howl from Wynne Jones...
Morphing_kashi wrote: "Lothlorien is pretty, but I don't think it counts as a house..."It does, if you hang your hammock between two trees or build yourself a treehouse! :D
Good question, I imagine it would be something like what the indigenous peoples in big forests like the Amazon in Brazil do, use the trees themselves as shelter. There are yuuuuuge trees, and you can build your cottage at the root, the big fat trunk protects you, and also when non-tree vegetation is dense, that can be used as a curtain to shield from storms. Do watch some docu about jungle dwellers sometime, it's interesting!
Thank you, Morphy, I hope so too. We did find one months ago, but some Richie Rich outbid us, and we're back to square zero...
Scott wrote: "Robert Crais' private eye Elvis Cole lives in an A-frame house in the hills above L.A., while Max Allan Collins' hit man Quarry has a lakeside one in rural Wisconsin."Had to look up A-frame house. It's so pretty! Similar to the "cake house" style I like.
And a lakeside house anywhere in the world is a dream! <3 You got good taste, Scott.

M;y mental image of that house comes from the anime adaptation.

I would say the Castle in Howl's Moving Castle because I get to stay cozy next to Calcifer and still roam the world (and as a bonus stay away from irritating people :D ).

It has a magical doorway that goes many places, but also a library full of books about magic, and a kitchen that provides food and cleans up - when the magic is working correctly, which it isn't for part of the book. But when things are going well, seems a great place to live to me! Tapping a table and requesting afternoon tea is the kind of magic I appreciate most!
