this book uses the word said too often
sometimes there are some really good moments, but then those are ruined
the style swap between the two authors is so apparent and makes the book uncomfortable to read
a lot of moments are out of character and awkward, just instances and interactions that are unnatural or would never happen

im trying really hard to like the book, but one thing that comes up so frequently (or in this case, doesnt come up at all) is the lack of indirect characterization and conclusion. so many things are explained when they dont need to be directly explained

i have a complaint: this book uses the words “says/said” WAY too often… direct quote:
“I hate this,” said Nico. “The whole situation makes me feel bad.”
“I know,” said Will. “It’s bringing out the paranoia in everyone.”
its like the number one rule of writing DONT use the word said often!!!! let alone twice!!! in a row!!!!!!!!

it was going pretty good until the mention of moo deng- how recently was this written??? this is too modern of a reference and hazel would NOT know who moo deng is. doesnt she stay off of technology?

its getting into the main conflict- i like the idea but mark’s writing style is really bleeding into rick’s. the allusions are waayyy to frequent and way to modern for my personal liking…
