this novel was very fun! it's interesting to see how howard approaches a full-length novel vs. his short stories. we lose very little of that fast-paced action, & yet neither does this feel rushed. loved seeing akivasha, however briefly-- i remember her mostly from the kull film. anyway, i am hoping to finish this today so i can start spooky month reading tomorrow, we'll see how much i get thru tonight

got two pages into this first story & was saying aloud to myself "my god this man is so good." very easy to see why "the people of the black circle" is widely considered one of his best works. it's the longest piece of his i've read so far (unless i am WILDLY misremembering that last collection) but he maintains that brisk pace w/o losing any of the beauty of his prose or skill in storytelling. just rly rly good

"our destiny, [conan] says, does not lie in the stars, or in our noble blood, but in our willingness to create ourselves" really really good ending to this introduction
