it took being in France 19 days — sent immediately to to the Battle of the Somme, and there for three months until its bitter end — to be “quite disillusioned about the splendour of war” and only two weeks more for “No matter what the cost and how many of us have to give our lives, this war must be so finished that war may forever be at an end.”
