18. "The Survivors" by Elsie Singmaster.
A Memorial Day Story
Civil War. One cousin joins the south (grey coats). He's the only one in the town who joins the south. Other cousin joins the north (blue coats) with everyone else who enlists from the town. After the war, the grey coat cousin refuses to speak to the blue coat cousin for the rest of their lives until the very last page.
Stubborn. Silly. Sentimental.

17. “Zelig” by Benjamin Rosenblatt
A Russian Jew in New York City.
Written in 1915, it has the stereotypes and racism of its day woven into the story.
But I still like these old stories because they remind me of how hard day to day life was for most people and how good we have it today even if we perceive our own reality as hard.

16. “The Waiting Years” by Katharine Metcalf Roof.
Sentimental war time love story. Well, the soldier loves a girl but she doesn’t know and then he dies and she lives life as a spinster but is happy and content and full of life even though she is “old” which is a revelation to the narrator.
