There are three main ways to avoid motivated reasoning: Wait for more data (never draw a conclusion from a single piece of data, no matter how compelling or how RIGHT it feels). Be suspicious of guarantees (once we are primed to think about the conclusion we want, we are highly suggestible to even the most dubious facts). Outsource the job (it's hard to recognise in yourself, but fairly easy to recognize in others).
