We can’t sustain the things we used to sustain: dynasties, clans, big families; we can’t even maintain their monuments. Statues are losing their noses, tombstones their letters. Growing up in an old city, you learn history’s one true lesson: that history fades. Nothing sticks together for very long without immense effort.
