Whatever he touches, touches him back. Everything has an effect, as if everything is alive. He enjoys picking things up from the ground and being affected by them—especially papers. I think paper here represents a thought or a worldview.

Earlier, he mentioned his inability to pick up a piece of paper from the ground in other words he could not comprehend something, and that inability angered him. He tried to get rid of the thought of this incapacity, or of his limited understanding, through academics—whatever the library represents. But since the paper is outside the library, I think it suggests that there is something the library does not or cannot contain.

Even before speaking about this inability, he mentioned the mysterious man. The most terrifying quality of this man was not his ugliness, but his mysterious nature—the fact that they did not know what was going on in his mind.So what he truly fears is not the ugliness of truth, but his inability to understand it.
