After 9/11, the Bush administration propounded an alternative con-stitution-a "Neoconstitution" in which trust would take the place of checks and balances. Under the Neoconstitution, the president has the power to ignore the law, spy on citizens, lock them up without due process, put troops in the streets, and keep Americans from finding out what happened if they're harmed along the way. Ergens hoopgevend dat onder Bush en Kennedy al meer anti-democratische en militaristische neigingen de boventoon voerden; o.a. de inzet van het leger om Amerikanen te bespieden en zelfs een tank om een vliegveld tegen terroristen te bewaken (MIA ,2001). Het Congres lijkt wel steeds de boeman te zijn: geef de president de macht maar, dan is het in ieder geval niet onze schuld als het misgaat.

Niet veel van over...

Interessant om nog eens te lezen dat de VS helemaal niet als presidentieel georiënteerde republiek is gesticht; afgezien van wat uitzonderingen zoals Polk (oorlogje spelen in Mexico) en Lincoln waren er vóór de 20e eeuw haast geen presidenten die zichzelf als boegbeeld van het volk zagen. Geen wonder dat Trump één van de eerste 'innovators' (T.R.) op dit vlak als voorbeeld ziet...
