I read the interview at the end of this volume, where the author and actress are talking about how kind Shoko is…but I don’t believe that never standing up for yourself or setting any kind of boundary with people is kind. You either force the people who love you to defend you because you won’t, or you force them to watch. Kind would be continuing to treat others well, but not allowing them to treat you badly.

Almost every one of these characters has something deeply wrong with them. I’m not even crazy about Shoko, whom everyone else (readers) seems to love. Not only do most of them behave terribly, they almost all seem incapable of growth or change.

Everyone in this series, except maybe Miyoko and little sis, seems to have a severe personality disorder. Not a one of them is capable of whole object relations; of seeing themselves and others as a mixture of good and bad. Everyone blames everyone else, villainises everyone else, except the ones who do it to themselves. Everyone is either saint or monster. It’s exhausting.
