Was playing w/my Top Friends function hoping to not miss so many people, & noticed some interesting trends:
- Fewer Tops than I thought.
- I have 25 favourite reviewers (only two know they are. :P)
- 51 users I like very much but that are never/rarely reciprocal with 'likes' & comments (I feel ignored, man.)
- 10 of my friends are chronic mass-reposters (Me no likey).
- Considering 18 users for adding to Tops.
You?

Hmmm…now I am curious. I don’t think I have ever looked at that since I mostly use my phone app version. I am guilty of reposting if I add to a review or if I notice a typo or something, to fix it I have to edit it and repost it🙄. I always wish that wouldn’t show up on peoples feeds when I do that. There should be fix a mistake but no one knows you did it feature! 😂

But I don't mean the occasional reposters and those that edit or rewrite their reviews. I mean those that repost and repost and repost the same review every time or that throw a bunch of old reviews into the feed.
It clogs the feed for everyone and is annoying.
Marta wrote: "Nm. Figured it out"Hehe, it's next to your Friend's name. Click on Edit Friends, and you can tick or tick off the Top Friends feature.
Critical Sandwich wrote: "i have so little friends yet i rarely see them all in updates"It doesn't depend on the number of friends, that's what I've learnt. It's a site glitch.
But having few friends helps with keeping track of them individually as opposed to when you have hundreds or thousands.
What are mass-reposters?I am incredibly picky with who I friend so that I can make sure my feed is always something I'll be interested in lol. Either well thought reviews, similar reading preferences (rating the same books roughly the same), etc.
The more friends I have the more overwhelmed I get lol. And I've had to remove a few people that just fill my feed with quotes they shared. =X
Marquise wrote: "Marta wrote: "Hmmm…now I am curious. I don’t think I have ever looked at that since I mostly use my phone app version. I get doing that at launch (I do that for my ARCs) but do people actually do that for a lot of their older reads? lol.
"I mean those that repost and repost and repost the same review every time or that throw a bunch of old reviews into the feed." >> I thought the GR algorithm does that on its own initiative?
I actually only have a few top friends. Only those I frequently interact with or know irl to be honest. That's what I think a top friend should be. And I don't think any of them are mass-reporters.Might I ask what you plan to do with that information? Are you going to change some of your tops?
I hadn't really paid a lot of attention to it. When I go into my friends list, I found GR had automatically made a lot of people top when friend requests were accepted. I can't see that it actually seems to affect how people show up in my feed. I do edit typos and other infelicities in my reviews when I see them. I hope this is not recycling a bunch of stuff in others' feeds.
I haven't thought about it this way, because I have deliberately kept my friend list small. But I have noticed there is a small percentage of people on here who share a bunch of friends. You, Marquise, being one of them.
I am clearly ignorant because I did not know there was a top friend function on here. I am just for the vibes of looking at books and add to shelves, and look at reviews. XD
Marquise wrote: "But I don't mean the occasional reposters and those that edit or rewrite their reviews."Happy to hear it because I have been updating a few older reviews over the last months, and I seriously hope I am not one of the 18! (I usually remember to uncheck the "show on feed" box, but yeah)
I have only 1 mass reposter and I think you and I might share that friend actually ^^
I had tried using Top Friends a while back but it didn't seem to make a difference. Is it consistently working for you? Do you use it for favorite reviewers?
Otherwise, I have around 15 GR friends with whom we interact on (semi)regular basis, and maybe 5 more who will reply if I reach out, but that's it + 3 who are real life friends so they interact with me over there, if not here - so maybe a 40-50% rate. The rest is totally inert ^^
You better add me, dang it! LOLI've never been a member friend hoarder.. I've always kept my friends list small.. Very selective and I also want to actually interact with people I befriend on this site.. So, one, I keep it small.. I don't accept every friend request and I also request friends even less..
It keeps all things uncluttered for me and I actually know and see the people on my friends list.. Out of that list, I keep my top friends between 10-12 members as well.. Every 90 days or so, I re-evaluate who I see the most of and who I engage with the most.. And that determines who stays on top friends and who goes..
Angelique wrote: "I am clearly ignorant because I did not know there was a top friend function on here. I am just for the vibes of looking at books and add to shelves, and look at reviews. XD"Many here don't know or don't use it. But don't feel bad, when I first joined GR and for the first couple of years, I had no idea either. 😂
This site has been equal measures of enlightening and irritating in terms of people watching. 😂
Betsie wrote: "But I have noticed there is a small percentage of people on here who share a bunch of friends. You, Marqu..."Haha, yeah. Everyone is friends with everyone here, at least the popular ones and the most active ones are all known to each other. There's even cliques, though they would probably not like to be described as such. Circles of friends sounds better.
Fred wrote: "I hadn't really paid a lot of attention to it. But GR does warn you, we just ignore the "please befriend only people you're interested in interacting with" bit. 😂
Oh, no, I don't mean people like you at all! Also, if you're worried about being a mass-reposter, you certainly aren't. The mass-reposters don't really care about clogging everyone's feed, they just do it.
Thibault wrote: "mass-reporters...."😂😂😂
Hilarious typo!
Mmmm... Methinks at least one of them is, but I might be wrong and that user isn't on your Tops.
Thibault wrote: "Might I ask what you plan to do with that information? Are you going to change some of your tops?"Hey, sometimes I share these bits of info just for the fun of it! I don't have any lofty plans. I was just editing my Tops to clean and streamline my feed a bit.
Elentarri wrote: ""I mean those that repost and repost and repost the same review every time or that throw a bunch of old reviews into the feed." >> I thought the GR algorithm does that on its own initiative?"Hahaha! Oh, no, not at all, El. It's very deliberate and intentional.
I mean, do you seriously think the algorithm is what is reposting the same review thrice a day or reposting a bunch of old reviews every day?
lj ♡ wrote: "is a mass-reposter someone who likes a lot of other people's updates? because that might be me lol"Sweet baby Jesus, I'm really surprised at the amount of people who don't know what a mass reposter is. o.O
But no, not at all. Re-post = post again. It's those that repost/reupload old reviews again and again to garner 'likes' and comments.
Megan » wrote: "(I do that for my ARCs) but do people actually do that for a lot of their older reads? lol"Yes, they do. That's how many reviews get all those hundreds of 'likes'. Not all of them, no, many get them because the reviewer has hundreds/thousands of friends and is popular or they have a book channel somewhere with a gazillion followers.
But others post and repost their reviews.
@ Marquise..This side effect of "old reviews" also comes from when a person has updated an old review, either through a re-read or a correction on it, or someone else has actually liked or posted a comment on that person's old review.. Then those peoples' friends sees it, and they like or comment, and so on and so forth... I know, cause this has happened to me before. When I see folks are all of a sudden liking or commenting on a review I did from months or years prior.. And I'm like Huh? Why are people liking this review all of a sudden?
Merry wrote: "Same as Megan, not sure what a mass-reposter is"To answer your and Megan's question, a mass reposter It's someone who:
a. Reposts/reuploads their review multiple times a day,
b. Reposts/reuploads the same review each day for X time,
c. Reposts a handful of old reviews each day or several days a week.
It's not someone who simply edits their review or rewrites/corrects old reviews, that's not remotely mass-reposting.
Megan » wrote: "The more friends I have the more overwhelmed I get lol. And I've had to remove a few people that just fill my feed with quotes they shared. =X"Yeah, I understand that. Not everyone has the same tolerance for socialising, some can manage a buncha people just fine and others only a handful at a time. It's all a matter of preference and personality. :)
Leilin wrote: "Is it consistently working for you? Do you use it for those 25 favorite reviewers, so as to see their updates more prominently?"No, sad to report. *sniffle*
Some of my favourite reviewers aren't even reciprocal. Like, they very rarely 'like' my stuff or comment, but that doesn't make them less of a favourite because it's their reviewing style what made them a favourite in the first place, not the tit-for-tat 'liking' and commenting.
I do like to reciprocate, and sometimes it does bother me that others aren't as reciprocal. But oh well, maybe they're thinking the same about me, because although I always reciprocate 'likes', I comment very little on others' reviews, and I know many here love to chat under reviews. There's entire book discussions under some reviews because people there are chatty.

Yeah, I know, that's what I've been saying upthread. It happens with my reviews as well, especially now that I'm writing and editing some of them.
Not what I meant, though. The mass-reposting is very obvious, you can tell when it's what you say and when it's deliberate. At least, I can.
Scott wrote: "Marquise wrote: "Scott wrote: "I want on that top list! 😂🙂😂"You already are, Scotty. 😂"
😮🙂❤️ Thanks!"
Anytime! ❤️
You know the thing that really creams my corn about the reciprocal thing?? I HATE when someone will comment on a review of mine, that they liked it or whatever, but they don't actually hit the like button on my review.. I always thought that was weird.. Cause you see the like button way before you see the comment box.. It almost feels like they don't want more people to see your review, to garner more exposure to your review, if they click the like button..IDK it's always just seemed weird to me if you like a review, like you say in your comment on it, then why don't you click the like button??? (shrugs)
If I like a review, I hit the like button first, before I scroll down to comment box, if I want to leave a comment or not..
@ Marquise"Not what I meant, though. The mass-reposting is very obvious, you can tell when it's what you say and when it's deliberate. At least, I can"
What are the obvious tells?? I want the tea!

Haha, see my @Merry upthread and observe 'round you and you'll see who fits the description.

(((((((((( Marquise )))))))))) hugs.
And, even if I don't know where the control for this is, you're on my tops.
*hugs back*For the control, go to "Friends" and click on "Edit Friends." That should show you the Top Friend box, which you can tick on and tick off as you wish.
@ Marquise(Giggles) I read it just now... Yeah, I've NEVER seen this done before.. I'm glad I haven't.. UGH
I have quite a few top friends, but nowhere near all of them show up in my feed. There was one whose updates I had exclusively seen through other friends' activity, and I made a point of going on their profile page and liking a couple things, and voila, they started showing in my feed again. This doesn't always work. My attempts at getting (points above) consistently in my feed have gone nowhere. I shouldn't have to take the initiative here, systems are made to do what you ask them to do, and be consistent about it. It really is infuriating how much free labor this site demands, for no fucking reason.
Marquise wrote: "*hugs back*For the control, go to "Friends" and click on "Edit Friends." That should show you the Top Friend box, which you can tick on and tick off as you wish."
Done! It appears that friends of mine, or friends of friends, on Hucksterman who are also here maybe are automatically made top friends? Didn't know Bezos the Bozo and Huck played nice together like that.
Marquise wrote: "This site has been equal measures of enlightening and irritating in terms of people watching."On this? I have added two persons' book review blogsites via here. One, like Marquise, is mainly a fiction reader, but doesn't have a fantasy focus or anything. They also review classical music from time to time, half of why I added them to my blogroll at my one blog.
The other is a British Marxist. Not all the books they have extended reviews for are Marxism-based books themselves, but many are. For example, since it was 500 years ago, this person is the editor of a set of essays, most but not all Marxist-based, about the Peasants' Revolt.
Definitely hate the lack of reciprocity. I've given up on that for the most part, since it just never seems to happen. I'd love to have discussions on the books I'm reading, since I don't share many book interests with people irl, but that doesn't happen on Goodreads either, so I'm stuck just speaking into the void, lol.
