But finally - I think we're supposed to take away that the book, like so many of Shakespeare's plays, can be interpreted in many ways. And that the obsession with Shakespeare continues & Oliver doesn't get "out" of this admitted cult. He (and the rest of them) are still caught in it. Consumed by it.
I dunno. I just love how much there is to grasp from this ending and this book. Makes it interesting over and over.

So, here we are, we're still in Shakespeare - we're still in the "play", so why wouldn’t it be true that James is alive? I think it's a question of what type of play is it - Pericles - is it a tragedy, or is it a romance? It's both. What are we reading? Tragedy or romance?
Beyond that - I can't imagine James being so cruel as to leave a note that gives Oliver hope like that when there is none.

Honestly, poor Meredith. Thinks she finally isn't in competition with James & then this happens.

Okay, so Meredith did meet Oliver after... it seems odd but makes sense that she would know telling Colborne is a type of betrayal of Oliver... or at least forcing something that she knows means she might lose him.
