This book is so depressing. Hard to sit and watch someone relinquish all control in their own life. Maria is kind of a bitch, but I can understand why she treats Ruth the way she does. How else are you supposed to handle someone who doesn't care about anything or anyone but....you? She's like this zombie that is programmed to do nothing but wait for Maria. It's off putting and scary. And not enjoyable to read about!
