This is a dumb update but I just needed the world (the people who follow me on goodreads) to know that the opening line is "His two girls are curled together like animals whose habit is to sleep underground, in the smallest space possible," which is just such evocative and descriptive that I can't believe I haven't read Kingsolver sooner
