and I do keep picking kingfisher up because whenever I’m starting to get really annoyed with everyone, things start happening again!

Theory: Kingfisher tends toward “reactive” plots where the characters end up going “gee, what a pickle in now, nothing to do but muddle onwards and definitely not talk about our mutual romantic feelings”. But I easily get impatient when there’s no suspense about how things will turn out.
