Hey Matthew! As chance would have it, I hiked the South Downs Way this spring with my brother, and so was not far from you...it is incredibly beautiful indeed! True story, further on, above Lewes, we met a mountain biker, who eventually said his family had long owned land hereabouts. We asked where, and he made a circular gesture & replied, well, nearly all of it, & since 1066. (He, in spandex, some Earl of So&so)... Daniel D has this to say about thereabouts:
