I'm trying to get through this, despite having looked up spoilers, because it's a library book I've checked out. I can't keep character names straight and I keep forgetting Whodunnit. It's solid enough writing, but it feels more like a chore read than pleasure.

Unable to help myself, I found a synopsis of the book and now I have all the spoilers I needed. Still going to finish it, because I'm at 60%

Both books in this story are compelling, despite all of the horror tropes being obvious -- almost like a chocolate chip cookie, you recognize the different elements of every other cookie like it, but you can also tell that the cook was a good one. Almost halfway through this cookie, and it's still good.

Chapter three: good, solid introduction to three new characters and a closing to a few others, the pace of the book continues to be well written -- which should be expected from a NYTBS author, but isn't always the case. Right now, I'm thinking that the story is going to turn out to be less supernatural and more realistic who-done-it than the author is trying to get the audience to believe in the end.

Okay, THAT chapter ended on a legit cliffhanger. I'm now on chapter three (just about to start it) and I already want to go to the end of the book and see how it ends and who survives. Apparently, the writing still is strong enough to keep me engaged.

Dislikable mother and dead father, not as many grown kids as in The Haunting of Hill House, but it's still giving me those kinds of vibes. While chapters don't end on a cliffhanger, the storytelling is solid enough to make me want to hear more.
