“You,” I say into his neck. “Always. It will always be you.” Lies. Beautiful lies.

“Are you mine?” he asks me, quieter, eyes still locked on mine.
My heart sinks a little at that question.
But still, I say the words he wants to hear. The words he needs to hear. “Yes. I’m yours, Lucifer.”

“What stopped you?”
“The gun wasn’t loaded.”
He laughs, shaking his head.
“I pulled the trigger, not knowing much about guns then, when I was just a kid. It clicked, and I flinched.When I flinched, I knew. I wasn’t really ready to go yet.”
He stares at me,desperately hoping that whatever I’m going to say is going to fix us.“When you slipped your hand in mine…You were my flinch.”

“You two are more alike than you think,” he says, groaning. “You are definitely brother and sister. One hundred percent Rain and one hundred percent assholes.”
“We’re not alike,” I argue. I don’t want us to be alike. We can’t be alike. I don’t think I’m a saint, by any stretch of the imagination. But Jeremiah is worse than Satan himself.
