Stephens admires Copán but views it through a colonial pov. He imagines buying the ruins dismantling them, and shipping them to New York as trophies for a museum. His dream reflects the 19 century belief that Maya heritage gained value only when removed from Honduras and displayed abroad. What he frames as preservation is in fact a vision of appropriation and cultural dispossession :)
