There are things about the book that I really like, such as the novel treatment of 'serpents' (water dragons) and live ships. The live ships are a fascinating exercise in investing the object world with personality. But it's a HUGE fall from the Assassin books. Disappointing. When will authors learn that readers don't want extended scenes of torture, domestic violence, and abuse? It's lazy storytelling.
