Howard Pattee is heavy going on the definition of symbolic constraints, but damn, I have not come across a more useful idea in semiotics. Pattee is the GOAT.

Is it possible to have a mechanistic theory of meaning when mechanisms are described by algorithms; symbol systems subject to interpretation? I'm intrigued to read further and unravel this paradox.
