Finished the "high schoolers break into the gym" chapter. Still brutal. I can't shake the feeling that Jones is writing this so it can be made into a movie. It's good, and the second time around I am following the characters better. But it feels like he has movie playing in his head.

One of my favorite thing about Jones is how happily he thumbs his nose at convention. But a 100 page chapter is a bit too much liberty. The movies that Jones is paying tribute are between 90 minutes and 120 minutes. A chapter that takes that long to read doesn't make sense.
I can't shake the feeling that Jones wants this turned into a planned slasher trilogy.

I can't shake the feeling that Jones is hoping this will be turned into its own horror trilogy. So many of his descriptions seem like director's notes on a script. He leaves almost nothing to the reader's imagination. The book is very good, and you can feel Jones' passion for his characters.
It is hard to ignore Jones attempts to hit certain horror beats, work in obscure slasher flicks and even call out to actors.

I wonder if Jones would love or hate the description of his writing as "pulp"?
I mean it as a compliment. This is the pulpiest. It's drunks, and murderers, and perverts and cigarettes.
At the beginning, I was thinking this wasn't as good as the first volume, My Heart Is a Chainsaw. Nearly 200 pages in, I think it may be better. The beginning of "Black Christmas" is the most jarring reading I've read in a while.
