Mbembe would benefit from slowing down and explaining some concepts and phrases at length. There's a handful of phrases and concept that he throws out there and then moves past too quickly. It makes reading rather difficult.

The idea that terror and counter-terror are two sides of the same coin is fascinating. Mbembe says they both encompass "a relation without desire," which I can't say I understand completely, but I do agree that, in the system we live in, "the law cannot be protected by the law - only nonlaw can protect it." (33)

As we watch ICE grab our neighbors off the streets as the White House releases gleeful videos of innocent people in chains, it's hard not to agree with this statement...
