What a dynamic set of essays. Beautifully written, great introduction. I just wish he’d lean into his mysticism more!

“Ultimately they are all founded on primordial archetypal forms whose concreteness dates from a time when consciousness did not think, but only perceived”

This is most intriguing to think about … so our collective unconsciousness is a product of the “observer”, the consciousness innate in all of us whose function is to observe the world and can be experienced during meditation ? This “observer” is unchanging.

Oh I love this already.

“Primitive man is not much interested in objective explanations of the obvious, but he has an imperative need—or rather, his unconscious psyche has an irresistible urge—to assimilate all outer sense experiences to inner, psychic events.” This is linked to astrology, which we now reject as man had not yet succeeded in making the psychological description of character independent of the stars
