It’s finally starting to come together and make a bit of sense.
I’ve worked out that Bryony apparently is killed regularly because she needs to bleed on an altar for a tithe - as a ritual sacrifice to prove to the God, Alexios (I think), that they’re loyal to him.
But then he banned her from bleeding because the public love her too much - he wants them to be loyal to him, not her.
