Chomsky's dissection of "defensive" language is a brutal mirror. He exposes how power, cloaked in noble terms, manufactures consent for its own expansion. This isn't history; it's a playbook. Seeing "defensive invasions" laid bare shatters any remaining illusion. Cont in comments-

Reading Chomsky’s dissection of loaded language, how ‘special interests’ means us, not the powerful, hits me differently now. My old self wouldve accepted the given framework, afraid to question the ‘dictionary meaning’ of my own relationships & workplace roles. I was my own propaganda tool, disempowered by my own terminology, always the ‘special interest’ in someone else’s ‘national interest.’

The same linguistic machinery that justified invading Russia whitewashes the genocide in Gaza today. It’s not containment; it’s empire. Recognizing this isn't scholarship, it's survival, the first step in refusing to be complicit in the narrative that sanctifies oppression.
