Young Haymitch and Katniss are so much alike. But what surprised me is that young Haymitch is more emotionally mature and self-reflective than Katniss is in the first book. He's still very defensive and grumpy —and deservedly so, given all the things that went wrong and being sent to fight to the death— but at least he's more emotionally literate.
