This has gone from good to great. What a portrait of the American Dream, of grit and decency and magic and the unbeautiful workings that make the magic. What a joy to read this fairy tale, ugly truth threaded through with myth and wonder and characters who live in one body but are are heroes and villains, princes and frogs, sirens and sleepy beauties all at once. It makes me even sadder that we killed all the myth.

The Horatio Alger themed fairytale continues. I like a character with ceaseless drive not connected to avarice. This latest section has been a joy. Martin seems like Robert Moses if Robert Moses had not been a terrible human but just a dreamer who got things done.

I love that Martin realizes that he craves a woman with no substance when he has women aplenty interested in him whom he actually likes and wants to spend time with and notes that is the essence of love in fairy tales. It feels fresh and honest in this context, a fact not a complaint.

So far a delightful visit to old New York and a very different America.
