Tbh the comparison with Yellowjackets…I see it, but it’s a bit shaky since Yellowjackets relies on the supernatural being ambiguous and here it’s a definite thing. TBH this feels closer to Madoka Magica: girls being tricked with opportunity when they are actually sacrifices, and being targeted in a gendered way

No revenge plot, just the girls being groomed to be new members of the Celestial Maiden cult. Also had a feeling Ms Tao was fishy and yup she’s a disciple of the Maiden. I bet the mud that makes everyone uncanny valley is actually making them not only the “ideal” face but making them look more like the Maiden cult

Ok the sequel is a standalone in the same universe

For a standalone book I won’t lie, while this is engaging, our protagonist has NO clue what’s truly going on. It’s 70% in and she has no real extra clues, just something she saw once and hasn’t seen again.

I bet that they def are trying to bring back the Celestial Maiden, but her spirit grows mad with seeing the body they shove her into
That or Mina is haunting everyone
Or they wanna bring back Mina??? Who knows!

I’m calling it now, part of this story is a revenge story and Faye is behind it somehow

Also I think this competition is killing off the girls are are being sent home. Offerings to the Celestial Maiden?
