Love your current reading choice! I’ve read the series twice… once as a teen and once in my early 30s before the movies started being released. I should be ready to read it again in a few years! 😎 Enjoy!

I love when certain books attract readers to the point where they want to know what page you're on and other great details like that!I read only THE HOBBIT as a teen, then read it again, last year, as part of my 30s project with my 15-year-old. She absolutely loved it and asked, last week, if we could start the trilogy. So, first time reading the trilogy for both of us, despite my obsession with Viggo.
Julie- such a coincidence that you have started reading these as my brother has been on at me for years to read LOTR, and I finally agreed, after all, so many millions of readers can’t be wrong in their assessment that this a stellar read. I too will start with the Hobbit.
Megan,You and I often experience simultaneous reads! How can either of us be blamed for our good taste??
Please do start with THE HOBBIT! To be honest, I think it's generally a more inviting way to start this journey. I have attempted THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING several times throughout my life, and this is the farthest I've gotten, thus far. I love Mr. Tolkien, but he does throw a lot of impossible to pronounce names at you, all before the page of 50. I keep asking my daughter if she's hanging in there, or losing her way.
Julie- I do sympathise as I am terrible when it comes to pronunciation. Luckily for me I am not having to read it aloud. BTW I just love that you read to your daughter. My Mum and Dad both kept reading to me long after most parents stopped - except they could never agree on the book so my Dad read books like The Jungle Book and with Mum it was usually a classic like Jane Eyre 😊
I love the combination of your parents' reads, Megan! (Adventure, mixed with complicated romances!)
I still need to read this series. It's one of my cultural blindspots.

I reread it last year and it reinvigorated my interest in attempting the trilogy again. Things are going much better for me, this time around, I think because I'm reading it aloud to my daughter. I do have the same niggle as last time though: too many complicated names that one can't pronounce! That's my only complaint, thus far.
I am a great believer in reading the Trilogy and The Hobbit out loud...glad you could manage it this time, Julie!
So true, H! Mr. Tolkien read them aloud to his own kids, originally, and I suspect that's why it seems natural to do so. (Not all of the names roll off the tongue, though!).
