First collection of poems, “It Catches My Heart in Its Hands”: generally depressive and too much use of the word ‘whore’ in a completely non-ironic sense for me to get fully on board with Bukowski’s messages, but there were some poignant lines here & there that remind me of his later works.

“I think that when a woman has kept her legs closed for 35 years it’s too late either for love or for poetry.” I knew there’d be problematic misogyny in the first sections of this book, but bloody hell, nothing could have prepared me for this kind of sentence. The way my jaw dropped on the tube💀😳

So far, the 1950s misogyny is shining through in this first section of the book. But I am staying open-minded knowing that Bukowski is generally known for his utter dislike of literally anything that breathes💀😂
