If Compassion was the theme of the main 10 MBOTF, Innocence is the theme here. Witness, of course, carries on through all of it. Sacrifice. Amazing sacrifice.

Ah, the mysteries of how the Malazans *always* know! Some really well -drawn characters fill this story.

Hot damn, Chapter 14 is Da Bomb! I am unable to articulate how powerful this chapter is, but please do understand its Hiroshima level strength.

No other author can give me the adrenaline rush of action and danger with the thrill of challenge and standing in the gap coupled with an emotional wallop to the soul of what loyalty, witnessing, living truly means. I close each section pumped up for action and exhausted from emotional draining.

Spindle, of course, but Gothos, Fisher kel Tath...it's good to find friends here.

And thus Book One closes and my soul is full. Ah, the beauty I find in Erikson's tale-telling! Such a sweet story enfolds. I'll savor it even as I know I'll rue it as we progress.

Steve writes so powerfully. His method of resonation actually plays me like a fiddle. So many striking, emotional scenes told in banter and misdirection, seen only through living them or looking sidelong at them. Dismiss the Malazan heavies only if you are a fool.

Ah, the sweetness of immersing within the Malazan world! My long delayed return is delightful. I, ahem, had anticipated a swifter appearance of book 2 in this promised trilogy and had decided to wait to read this book so as to read them in succession. Little did I know the wait would be extreme. Now, on the eve of book 2's release, I begin this wondrous advent anew.
