"It could have been Uncle Jerry, who enjoyed it too much, who got to do whatever he wanted. He loved giving group spankings, seemed to feed off the crying and screams. He loved to brag about how even Grandpa thought he was one of the best spankers in The Family. As bad as his spankings were when he was performing for the crowd, it was always worse when he would take you alone into his room and close the door."

"There was no such thing as safety, not here or anywhere. I was once again immersed in a world where predators not only survived, but thrived, where they were rewarded for the very qualities that made them good predators."

"America does what the army does, just at a larger and more insidious scale. The programming begins at birth: America is the greatest country on earth. We are the best, down with all the rest, and if we have to torture a thousand innocent people to prove it, so be it. When you believe you’re the best, the chosen ones, then the end can always be made to justify the means."

'“I can promise you that these are bad guys. If I have to torture a thousand innocent people in order to save one American life, I’ll do it, no question!”'

'...the captain ... talked about the difference between what had been defined by the Bush Administration as “enhanced interrogation techniques”—things like stress positions, sleep deprivation, and the infamous waterboarding—versus what he called “real torture.” Torture was what bad guys did, like cutting off fingers and pulling out teeth. We didn’t do that stuff. We were the good guys.'

"Maybe it was easy to call stress positions humane when you’d never had to hold the King James Bible in your outstretched arms for an unspecified period of time, before you were even old enough to read it. [...] They didn’t know that hunger, sleep deprivation, uncertainty, and horror will get people to say anything, do anything, to make it stop."

"Morales had been loaded into the back of the van alone because the drill sergeants hadn’t wanted to pull anyone else out of the march to be his battle buddy. He’d been found later lying in the road, apparently having fallen out of the van, by a couple of soldiers out for a late-afternoon run, who’d called the ambulance. Morales died in the hospital of a 106-degree fever."

Really appreciate the cult/army comps

"Before the C-section, the doctors asked her if they wanted her tubes tied, since she’d already had seven children. They told her that her uterus was so weak it could rupture if there were another pregnancy too soon, resulting in death. But like a good soldier, Mom shook her head, insisting she’d trust God to take care of her."

"[...] Auntie Hope left the Children of God, her children, and her adopted name to receive care from the family she hadn’t seen in almost twenty-five years.

When the Children of God excommunicated her, the leadership told us she deserved brain cancer and the drawn-out, painful death that would occur. God would punish her, not once, but twice, first by taking her son, then by taking her life."

'I remember hearing the stories of the romantic storybook wedding between the septuagenarian Prophet and a bevy of girls, ranging in age from fourteen to a toddler who was barely three. It was mere symbolism, we were told. A marriage to Jesus. A commitment to the faith. But, of course, there was “love up time” afterward, when the girls took turns alone with the old man.'

"Mom was the youngest of her generation to get pregnant by a full-grown adult, and everyone seemed surprised that a baby could result from a girl sent from bed to bed, expected to share God’s love through sex with all the men in the commune."
