While reading The Housemaid, I relate to the desperation that leads someone to tolerate toxicity as a means to an end. A placeholder job. I can see my younger, more naive self slipping into that role. Though, I’m not sure Nina would hire me. I’d have too many questions, need clear rules, and probably keep a notebook in my apron to track her contradictions. My hyper-vigilance might’ve cost me the job entirely.
