Benjamin’s point of view is a difficult one. He has the mental state of a mind, though he is 33 years old. His narrative voice is childlike in grammar and vocabulary, making it difficult to discern what is truly happening. Some things shine through: his family is poor, racial relations are tense and his friend Caddy is going through a significant amount of abuse. In essence: nobody is happy.
