"The absence of a moral position by Western governments was influenced considerably by their racial attitude. Despite the unconventional nature and up-to-dateness of the plant and equipment that Saddam was seeking, the suppliers never believed that he would make sense out of what he was purchasing."

Abdullah Mushtaq how's it up until now?

message 2: by Asjad (new) - added it

Asjad @Abdullah Mushtaq it's pretty good. Feels more like it's using Saddam as a vehicle to explore Iraqi politics more so than being a straight biography on him. It's interesting to read a balanced take on his life, not shying away from covering both his successes and failures, owed in part to the author's own arab background and personal involvement in the world (albeit not being a figure who is either a propagandist or nemesis). Only just read his pre 1979 life and it has surprised me with how much control he had even as a VP, with Bakr being a hindenburg type figure who just signed off on whatever Saddam wanted to do.
