I don't care whether I am barely 15% in, this is a work of art - Etsy transcribes the story of the priest who reports the story of Good-Stab. Not only do all 3 have distinct voices, but it is so well conveyed that to some extent you can tell subtle switches like maybe inaccurate reporting from the priest at times, or code-switching from Good-Stab when he gives his confession vs converses with the priest, and so on.

JULIA I really want to read this book. Some of the reviews scared me. I’m glad to hear you are gripped so early

Leilin I am very surprised by the reviews I saw that say this has a slow start (we start with a skinned body found nearby and by the 15% mark where I am, the supernatural is already well established!)

The writing reflects each characters' voices: both are distinct but somewhat dated styles, which is maybe what's putting some people off? Not sure. And both like to digress a bit: the priest likes self-reflection and conceptualization, while Good-Stab's narration reflect the oral tradition of his people... and also, it seems, what he thinks will sway the priest: he seems to be giving him a lot of what he wants, which is to feel like he is learning a lot of ethnic/sociologic details from this exchange. I think it's actually extremely interesting to see them modulate their own voices, the code-switch I mentioned, while they interact. I'm totally enthralled!
