Somebody with too much time on their hands recently counted up the number of times European cities were mentioned in all the books in Google Books from 1920 - 2020. It's not too surprising that London, Paris and Rome occupied the top three spots. From there, counting down, we have Berlin, Florence, Vienna, Athens, Dublin, Amsterdam and Brussels.

I'm a little surprised about Brussels. Nothing Scandinavian?

Sree I guess a big part of those would be WW2 or Cold War related. Rest about the aftermath. I am more surprised with Dublin being there than Brussels. After all every book on EU would have Brussels mentioned in Every para.
As for Scandinavian, only people interested in those places seem to be the Scandinavians themselves who write gloomy serial killer mysteries with plenty of ice and in$e$t.

carol. Or someone playing around with AI? No longer can we blame it with someone with too much time in the way we used to think of it...

Ilse It's a little surprising that Brussels seem to come before Venice?

Left Coast Justin I think you're right, Sree, nonfiction books about establishing a new pan-European government no doubt contributed a lot to Brussels' spot on the list.

Although we tend to get grotesque murders and sexual violence from our Nordic brethren in English translation, people up there read and write far in excess of the norm. Maybe they write about hanging out on the Costa del Sol?

Left Coast Justin Carol, software was definitely involved -- they found over 267 million mentions of London during their study -- but more the type of software that feeds AI and AI itself. But I'm just guessing.

Left Coast Justin Cool, Ilse! Now you can read about Venice and still feel like you're on the cutting edge. 😊

mwana Mmm. And how many global south cities are mentioned? Were there worldwide stats?

message 8: by Ilse (new)

Ilse Oh, I love Brussels, Justin - and I love the idea I'll never see Venice in the real :). So it were not only the fiction books in the counting?

Left Coast Justin Mwana, in this exercise they were only counting European cities. This was sponsored by one of those online travel agencies, and they know where their money comes from.

Left Coast Justin Ilse, it was the entire corpus of Google Books.

Left Coast Justin ...and I've never been to Brussels, dammit! The only Belgian city I've spent any time in was Liege, which I liked just fine, but later read is considered a down-at-heel rust pile by the rest of the country.

Sree Maybe they write about hanging out on the Costa del Sol?"

That they definitely do. Snow and cold is probably reserved for murders and cheerful stories happen elsewhere. Growing up in the tropics I took the sun for granted but living in Germany I have come to appreciate the sunshine.

The only Belgian city I've spent any time in was Liege, which I liked just fine... *shiver down the spine* Ugh, Liege is indeed Rust-pile doubling as garbage dump (no offense to the good people that call it home.)
