Today I’ll be speaking with librarians about Evil Genius. I think I’ll tell them about The Crab Queen. She is the 3rd monstrously strong supernatural female guardian I’ve created to guide the protagonists in my novels. In Chouette it was “The Owl Lover.” In Poor Deer it was “Poor Deer.” The Crab Queen is my favorite monster-guardian of all though. Fearless. All powerful. Metes out justice without mercy. I love her.

Claire Oshetsky The library talk was so much fun! The other writer-speakers on the panel were all so interesting. I can't link (Boo, Goodreads!) but if you go to YouTube and type the words "oshersky" and "library" in the search box it will get you there probably.

I -did- talk about the Crab Queen! She is a subtle but powerful influence on what happens in the story, scrabbling around at the edges, making stuff happen, whispering advice in her gurgly voice in my protagonist's ear. She isn't a big musky deer type to stumble in where she isn't invited, in fact she's so subtle that you can read her as subtext. But I think of her as something different, real-but-not-real, sort of like a black-and-white monster that has somehow escaped into the real world from Roger Corman's 1957 film "Attack of the Crab Monsters." (Available on Tubi!)
