I once read a quote by James Baldwin that said something to the effect that the beat generation was a gentrified, white version of the experience black artists wrote about a decade prior. I have been putting off reading Kerouac for awhile because I get the feeling that he is a smug edgelord who thinks he's invented bohemian suffering. We will see! I'm excited!
