I'm looking to get a book for a guy friend. He's 18 and likes fantasy/sci-fi. I'm not sure what to get him. Any suggestions??

I agree with Abby if you want a younger grade series, otherwise I’d recommend Andy Weir, his sci-fi books are great!
I also agree with Abby, or The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielsen (also middle-grade) or Skyward by Brandon Sanderson (which is YA)
The False Prince by Jennifer A Nielsen Skyward by Brandon Sanderson
This Dreamer by Sara Watterson
The Nightmare Virus by Nadine Brandes
Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan
(these are all books I’ve recommended to my 17 yr old guy cousin and he’s read the first three and enjoyed them!!)
red rising! it’s a dystopian sci-fi! it has a few cws but if he’s okay with those, the story line is amazing!
Maximum Ride by James PattersonThe Wingfeather Saga by Andrew Peterson
Dune by Frank Herbert
Monster by Frank Peretti
The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey
Eragon by Christopher Paolini
The Maze Runner by James Dasher
Red Rising by Pierce Brown
Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan
Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins
my brother read most of these, and the rest I would recommend to 15-19 year old guys

The Will of the Many by James Islington is one of my favorite fantasy novels, and has a government/caste system with a very ancient Greek and Roman vibe. Also, part of the story is set at an elite academy type thing, which I love. The Breath of the Dragon by Shannon Lee is a novel that feels like a fantasy version of a martial arts action film - it was very cool and a super easy/quick read!
Other than that, I definitely second the Sanderson books being recommended here, and suggest starting with either Mistborn or Elantris.
On the sci-fi side of things, I've always loved Isaac Asimov's work. You might start with his short stories, which give you a good idea of the feel of his writing, or jump right into his Foundation series.
Let us know what you end up picking and if your friend likes it!
