One thing that’s lost in the movie (although fairly well-captured by Sean Astin’s performance) is the class element. Frodo, Pip, and Merry are all rich kids and Sam’s working class.

It's hilarious how many times it's mentioned that Bilbo's original story of how he "won" the ring was a lie. It's a clever retcon but dude move on.
