Kristin is 72% done

I wish I could have met Octavia Butler. From what I have read about her, she sounds incisive and interesting. I read that she had to take a break from writing after she finished this book because writing it made her so depressed. I think that says something about the feelings she had for the topics, and it shows. I can feel that pain while reading.

My only complaint is the sheer volume of rape and especially child rape. Some of what she wrote borders on prophetic, but I would hope with every ounce of my soul that even if the guardrails of society are obliterated, I would hope most men were not so vile and human nature not so cruel. But I guess I could see from Butler's point of, view, she might simply say, "It is."

Butler is a master writer. If not, I would not be reading such a dark and depressing book.
