This should be taught in school. When the British abolished slavery (Slavery Abolition Act of 1833), plantation owners immediately sought a new, cheap, and controllable labour. The solution was the importation of over half a million indentured labourers, primarily from India, starting in 1838 and continuing until 1917-1920.
